Top 5 Picks from Marvel’s Solicits for May 2014

Continuing the article from looking at Image and DC’s Solicitations, I turn my attention to Marvel’s projected releases for May, with them being revealed in full on CBR. Here are five, mostly newcomer friendly series that are must reads in May 2014.

Story: Greg Rucka | Art: Russell Dauterman | Price: $3.99

Cyclops just discovered that he thought died long ago is alive and well and A SPACE PIRATE. Spinning directly out of ALL NEW X-MEN comes the first ongoing series for one of the time-travelling Original X-Men. After the events of “Trial of Jean Grey”, Cyclops stays in space to learn some valuable lessons from his dad: 1) How to shave. 2) How to talk to girls. 3) How to steal a Badoon spaceship.

WHY SHOULD YOU BUY THIS? It’s the biggest surprise release to come out of All New Marvel Now. (Don’t kid yourself, Parker fans – you all knew that he’d be back in time for Amazing Spider-Man 2) and with Greg Rucka, the writer of Lazarus, on board for a road trip through space with young Cyclops things should be very fun indeed – and if anyone has the potential to make Cyclops a likable character then it can be Rucka. It should be interesting to see how this turns out for sure, and it could rock.

Story: Brian Michael Bendis | Art: Dave Marquez  | Price: $3.99

  • Miles is back in action with a new status quo and a new outlook on life!
  • A BIG BIG BIG villain from PETER PARKER’s past is alive and well and about to turn New York Upside Down.
  • The last page will have ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN fans SCREAMING!
  • This issue can’t be missed.
WHY SHOULD YOU BUY THIS? Well, for starters, in the words of the solicit, this issue can’t be missed. And claiming that this is the biggest Spider-Man story of the year in the same year as Peter Parker’s return is always going to be hard to pull off, but I for once, have faith in Bendis – mainly because his Ultimate Spider-Man books have been the best of his Marvel series that I’ve read outside of Guardians of the Galaxy, with All New X-Men only now getting out of a poor quality period and Uncanny X-Men is off my pull altogether. So this should be a blast.
Story: Mark Waid | Art: Chris Samnee | Publisher: Marvel Comics | Price: $3.99
  • The Owl is back.
  • But old enemies aren’t nearly as much a problem for Matt Murdock as his new friend: The Shroud.
  • Kirsten and Matt are sharing a very volatile secret — who’ll be the first to crack?
WHY SHOULD YOU BUY THIS? We no longer have the luxary of the  2.99 pricetag which is becoming more and more rare in Marvel these days but it’s the same creative team that stuck around before the relaunch so this should be very awesome indeed. Last issue of the pre-relaunch title hit shelves yesterday (I’m getting it either today or tomorrow), so it should be a very interesting read. #1 hits shelves not long after #36’s conclusion, so it’ll be interesting to see where this road takes us.
Story: G. Willow Wilson | Art: Adrian Alphona | Price: $2.99
  • Marvel’s breakout hit, Ms. Marvel – continues as Kamala Khan discovers the dangers of her newfound powers.
  • And unlocks the secret behind them as well.
  • Don’t miss the boldest and (adorable-est!) hero to make her Marvel debut.
WHY SHOULD YOU BUY THIS? The first issue of Ms. Marvel debuted earlier this month to critical and fan acclaim and this could well be the Peter Parker for this generation and this series should continue to rock. I loved #1 and at the rate this series is going it could easily get into the Top 5 of my favourite Marvel series in the near future. It should be great.

Story: Michel Fiffe | Art: Amilcar Pinna | Price: $3.99
  • THE YOUNG ULTIMATES are put to the test as they try to survive their first mission – going head to head against the city’s most ruthless gang – THE SERPENT SKULLS.
  • KITTY PRYDE takes the bait and finally joins the team in an effort to push back the unrelenting wave of brutality.
  • Jessica Drew takes on the mantle of BLACK WIDOW!!!
WHY SHOULD YOU BUY THIS? All New Ultimates should be great. It’s a young team and hopefully #1 will have been awesome so this will be a good jumping on point for newcomers to the Ultimate-verse like myself. This should be a great series with a good mix of young cast so it should be very interesting to watch unfold.
